THE TYPES AND CAUSES OF GLAUCOMA
The word ‘Glaucoma’ originated in Greek, which commonly describe the color of
eyes which are not dark in color. It is also known as ‘Silent thief of sight’
because vision decrement occurs very slowly over a long span of time
and symptom only occurs when it reaches at their worse
stage. Glaucoma is a disease which refer to a group of ocular disorder that
result in optics nerves damage, sometime it is associate with increase of fluid
pressure in eyes. The increase in the fluid pressure can damage the optic nerve,
which help in transmission of image to the brain. This pressure in eyes is
painful that can cause permanent blindness
within a few years, if not treated properly.
The disorder can be
classified into two main categories that are open angled and closed angled
glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma is painless whereas closed angled glaucoma is
characterized by sudden strike in intraocular pressure and is treated as a
medical emergency. In this disease, there is a permanent damage of eye sight in
the affected eyes.
There are several causes of
this disease but mainly, ocular hypertension is the most risky factor and
primarily, 50% of population is affected by the open angled glaucoma. It can be
develop in both eyes and symptoms are progressive loss ofvisual field, optics
nerves changes, sudden ocular pain, seeing holes around lights, red eyes and
sometime people may miss objects to the side and
at the corner of their eye.
Conventional surgeries and laser are used to disinfect Glaucoma. People with
Congenital Glaucoma is controlled by Surgery. There is no permanent cure of this
disease. If the Vision is lost from this disease then it cannot be restored.
Uncommon causes of this disease includes chemical injury to the eye,
severe eye infection, blood vessels blockage, eye surgery, eye’s inflammatory
sensation in the eye to correct problem of eyes. Anyone can be affected with
glaucoma but highly affect people are
African Americans over age 40,
anyone over age 60, especially Mexican Americans and People with a family
history of glaucoma. A detail diagnosis of eyes can reveal the hidden risk
factors such as high pressure, thinness of the cornea and abnormal anatomy of
optics nerve. Medicines in the form
of eye drops can reduce the 50% suffering of glaucoma.
