Thrush – A Danger towards Tooth & Mouth
Thrush – A Danger towards
Tooth & Mouth
Thrush is a fungal infection mainly occurring in mouth. The causal agent is a
fungus called Candida, or yeast. Though, candiasis occurring in mouth or throat
is referred as thrush, there appears other parts of the body where this fungal
infection can pass over to. Although, there exists a certain amount of candida
fungus in the mouth, digestive tract and skin of people having sound health.
But, the situation traverses from the point when this natural balance of candida
fungus is disturbed due to reasons like stress, serious health problems etc. and
this fungus goes out of the way causing the thrush to develop. Thrush can
develop in a human body pertaining to any age but it is seen most commonly to
develop among infants and babies. Women and men can also get infected from
thrush, as in women, the most common way in which thrush gets transposed is by
Breast feeding babies infected by the very fungus. Candida Albicans is the most
common and frequently occurring yeast that causes thrush in the human body.
There are some medications that causes the imbalance in the microorganisms
present in the mouth leading to the development of thrush:
Usage of Antibiotics
Consumption of Birth Control
There, moreover, exists some situations where due to some ongoing
diseases/health disorders, person is more likely to suffer from thrush. Persons
suffering from Diabetes, Cancer, HIV Infection, addicted to smoking are more
prone to get affected from thrush. Also, women post pregnancy can develop thrush
due to the imbalances in their hormones.
The main sign representative of development of Thrush is the occurrence of
lesions in the mouth, usually creamy white in colour, that is present mostly on
tongue, inner cheeks, gums, tonsils and behind the throat. In many cases among
infants and babies where thrush is not of a chronic kind, treatment is an easy
going process with chances of 100% recovery. But, in situations picturing severe
thrush, the difficulties may accentuate, on account of the lesions spreading
over to oesophagus. This severity can cause obstruction in swallowing food and
can also cause a rise in body temperature, if the infection spreads beyond the
swallowing tube (Oesophagus).
The measures that can create a barrier for this fungus to grow out of control
are simple that should be followed as a basis of daily routine.
Care on Oral Hygiene
Visiting Dentist on a regular
balanced quantity of sugar and yeast containing products
Limiting the use of
mouthwashes and sprays.
