Beriberi: The vitamin B1 disorder!
Many of us have countless problems and their solution is as easy as it can get. It’s important to walk properly to get the right posture; to communicate properly; etc to improve the overall quality of life. But what if we are unable to walk or talk well because we don’t eat properly due to the deficiency of a certain Vitamin?
Thiamine is a water soluble vitamin whose deficiency may lead to beriberi, a disease caused due to malnutrition. People may become deficient in thiamine either by not taking in enough vitamin B1 or by excessive use which may occur in pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, fever or lactation. Beriberi affects the cardiovascular system (wet beriberi) or the nervous system (dry beriberi). Body’s inability to use thiamine, excessive alcohol or poisoning and a rare genetic disorder may cause beriberi too.
The beriberi symptoms depend on whether it is related to cardiovascular system (wet) or the nervous system. Common dry beriberi symptoms include:
Wet beriberi involves the following common symptoms:
If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, or even unexplained weight loss, prompt medical care should be taken.
Complications of beriberi
Beriberi is a serious condition that may become life threatening. If the treatment gets delayed, symptoms might become permanent and frightening. Therefore, immediate treatment options must be thought of if any of the abovementioned symptoms are witnessed and minimize the associated complications which may include:
Treatment under the supervision of a health care department professional is very important to ma e sure the symptoms are controlled. Thiamine levels in the body must be brought to the normal level. Oral or injectable supplements of thiamine can always help to manage its level. If properly treated, symptoms of beriberi can be reversed and the person can lead a normal life.
